The Yule Log

The tradition of burning a Yule log on Christmas Eve is an ancient one – a large log, found or given but not bought, would be brought with great ceremony into the Manor House on this evening.  Songs were sung in its honour, and guests had to pay tribute before passing on.  It was thought that as the log burned it would burn away all bad luck and old wrong.   A small piece of log would be kept to light the next year’s Yule log.   As the tradition of burning the Yule log has died, we keep the custom alive by making a chocolate Yule log to eat on Christmas Day.
